    About Bulgaria

The History of the Bulgarian Language

Bulgarian is a South Slavic language spoken primarily in the Balkans. Bulgarian began as a southern dialect of the language Common Slavic, this dialect is now known as Old Bulgarian. Old Bulgarian was spoken between the nineth and eleventh centuries and evolved into Middle Bulgarian around the twelfth century. Middle Bulgarian was spoken until the fifteenth century and was used as the Second Bulgarian Empire’s administration language. A recognisable modern Bulgarian language began to appear in the sixteenth century, which was mostly based on the Eastern dialects of Middle Bulgarian language.

During the evolution of Bulgarian words from other languages were adopted into the Bulgarian language. Today these loanwords make up about 25% of Bulgarian. Russian and French have been the two largest contributors of loanwords into Bulgarian. There are also many Greek and Latin words, which is common for most European languages. Turkish, Arabic and Persian words were all introduced during Ottoman rule and slowly replaced the native terms. In more recent times English loanwords have increased although they still only account for 2% of all the Bulgarian language.

Bulgarian is most widely spoken in Bulgaria and is one of the official languages of the European Union. Bulgarian is also spoken by minority groups in other countries and is a recognised minority language in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Moldova, Serbia, Albania, Romania, and the Ukraine.

In the United Kingdom, there are currently over a hundred thousand Bulgarian speakers, making Bulgarian an important minority language. Business and local councils trying to improve communications with the communities can benefit from Bulgarian translations.
