    About Lingala

The History of the Lingala Language

Lingala, also called Ngala, is a Bantu language spoken in central Africa. Lingala is an official language in the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo and smaller numbers also speak Lingala in the Central African Republic and Angola.

Linguists believe Lingala evolved from Bangi as a creole language in Central Africa. Bangi was a trade language spoken by the Bangala people who lived along the Congo River. The word ‘Lingala’ means ‘language of the Bangala’ and first appeared in 1903 after attempts to expand and standardize the language had occurred.

Lingala borrows words from several European languages including Spanish, French, Portuguese, and English. The popularity of these European loanwords varies across region, occasion, and generation.

There are also several dialects of Lingala. These include Brazzaville Lingala, Kinshasa Lingala, Standard Lingala, and Spoken Lingala. Spoken Lingala is the most common form used in everyday speech, while Standard Lingala is used for formal purposes including education, radio, television, and news.
