    About Mirpuri

    The Mirpuri Dialect

Mirpuri is a dialect of the Pahari-Pothwari language. Pahari-Pothwari is an Indo-Aryan language, spoken natively by approximately 4 million people. The language is known as Pahari, Pothwari and Mirpuri, which also represent the three major dialects. The language is native to India and Pakistan. Mirpuri is spoken in the Mirpur district in Azad Kashmir, to the east of where the Pothwari variant of the language is spoken. Mirpuri is more like Pothwari than Pahari and shares some features with Punjabi.
Due to significant amounts of immigration from the Mirpur region, Mirpuri is now the most common form of Pahari-Pothwari spoken in the United Kingdom. An estimated 60% of the British Pakistani population speaks the Mirpuri dialect, making it one of the most common first languages in the country.
