About Chichewa

Chichewa is a Bantu language also known as Chinyanja, Nyanja and Chewa. Chichewa is spoken in Southeast Africa by approximately 12 million people and is an official language in Zambia and Malawi. Chichewa also recognised as a minority language in Zimbabwe and Mozambique where are there a notable number of speakers.

In Zambia a distinct dialect of Chichewa exists called Zambian Town Nyanja. This dialect is particularly common in the capital city and includes loanwords from English, Bemba, and other Zambian languages. Chichewa also has regional dialects, with a growing difference between Chichewa speakers in urban areas and villages.

Chichewa Language History

Chichewa is the language of the Chewa who are a part of the Maravi people. The earliest record of the Chewa people places them in northern Mozambique and the Eastern Province of Zambia from at least the sixteenth century.  It was not until 1877 that any extensive writing of the Chichewa language was completed, since there several grammar books and dictionaries have been written.

Today, Chichewa can be depicted using two writing systems, the Chewa alphabet, which is Latin based or Mwangwego script, which was developed for Bantu languages and is not yet widely used.
