    About Urdu

The History of the Urdu Language

Urdu is an Indo-Aryan language found predominantly in India and Pakistan. Like Hindi, Urdu is a form of Hindustani, which developed during Islamic rule in India. As Hindu and Muslim cultures came in close contact, the language of Old Hindi began to acquire Persian words causing Urdu to begin evolving by the thirteenth century. In 1780 the name Urdu was introduced for the language, and it was made the official language of Pakistan in 1947.

While most of the 170 million Urdu speakers can be found in the Indian subcontinent, Urdu speakers can be found across the world. Noteworthy communities of Urdu speakers can be found in Germany, Australia, Norway, Canada, and the United States. In the United Kingdom, Urdu is one of the most common languages, after English, Welsh, Polish and Punjabi. Urdu is spoken by around 269,000 people in England and Wales, making up 0.5% of the population.
