    About Tamil

The History of the Tamil Language

Tamil is a Dravidian language, native to India and Sri Lanka. Tamil is one of the oldest languages still spoken today, with Old Tamil developing in 300 BC. The earliest records of Tamil are inscriptions on pottery and in caves. There are also Tamil poems recorded between 100 BC and 400 CE.

Between the eighth and the sixteenth century Middle Tamil was spoken, this period saw the introduction of Sanskrit loanwords into the language as well as Sanskrit influence over the grammar. In the thirteenth century the NannÅŦl was written to record Tamil grammar, and it remains the basis of standard grammar to this day. In modern times, European languages have begun affecting the Tamil languages with changes like the inclusion of European style punctuation, which has caused some backlash.

Tamil has been in continuous use since the third century BC. It’s the only classical language that has continued into modern day use without interruption and today it is one of the 20 most spoken languages in the world.

In India, Tamil is one of the 22 scheduled languages, and it is the official language of the state Tamil Nadu. It is also one of the national languages of Pudcherry, one of the territories of India. Tamil is also one of the two national languages of Sri Lanka which has approximately 4.7 million Tamil speakers, mostly in the Northern and Eastern Provinces. In Singapore, Tamil is one of the four official languages and 4% of the population speaking Tamil.

There are sizable populations of Tamil speakers in the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Burma, and Vietnam. There are also large minority populations in Malaysia, Mauritius, and South Africa, all of which recognise Tamil as a minority language.

In the United Kingdom there are over 100,000 Tamil speakers, with most of them come from Sri Lanka. Tamil is the eleventh most common immigrant language in the United Kingdom making it a useful language for connecting with minority communities around the country. Here at Translate UK we work with local councils and businesses to help build these connections. Contact us today to find out about our Tamil translation and interpreting services.
