    About Azeri

    Azeri Language History

Globally, Azeri is spoken by approximately 30 million people. Whilst the majority of these people are located within Azerbaijan, Azeri still finds itself spoken in the regions surrounding Azerbaijan and throughout Europe in various diaspora communities.

Azeri is a Turkic is one of the Oghuz languages within the Turkic language family. As with all the languages in the Turkic language family, it maintains a decent degree of mutual intelligibility with other languages in the family, like Turkish and Turkmen.

Azeri evolved from the Eastern branch of Oghuz Turkic and came into prominence within the Caucasus at the beginning of the 16th century. From the 16th century to the 20th, the language served as a lingua franca throughout most parts of Transcaucasia. As the language evolved it has been heavily influenced by Persian and Iranian languages and uses the Perso-Arabic script for its written form.
