Czech Language History
Czech is a West Slavic language primarily spoken in the Czech Republic. Czech is part of the Czech-Slovak language group which developed during the high medieval period within West Slavic. As such it is very closely related to Slovak, though it is also closely related to Polish. Like Slovak and Polish Czech is among the Slavic languages which adopted Latin script, and the Czech alphabet has been used since the 11th century.
During the Czech National Revival in the 18th and 19th centuries, the modern written standard became codified. This was based on the vernacular of Prague, but is now spoken throughout the Czech Republic.

Currently, Czech spoken by more than 10 million people in the world. Most Czech speakers live in Central Europe, Eastern Europe, or Southeastern Europe. Czech is only an offical language within the Czech Republic, however it is recognised as a minority language in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Austria, Croatia, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. In Slovakia it is also allowed to be used for official communications, such as that with the government.
The language is also used by 0.47% of the population in Germany, 1.93% of the population in Portugal and 0.35% of the population in the United Kingdom. Czech is one of the 24 languages recognised as official languages of the European Union.
